TSI Headquarters: A Dialectic of Transparency and Anchor

The TSI project reimagines the modernist steel and glass pavilion, navigating the tension between Mies van der Rohe’s floating horizontalism emphasizing the infinite vista of the natural surroundings and Philip Johnson’s grounded containment of employing a 10-inch high red brick plinth providing a solid anchoring. Each of these glass structures delineates a significantly different relationship to the ground plane. While referencing the iconic transparency of both the Farnsworth and Glass Houses, this design establishes a distinct, contextual relationship to the site. The existing 1954 two-story glass volume is set at five feet below the sidewalk level with the opportunity to provide a continuous ribbon of light wells anchoring it across the building’s front and rear. The building neither floats nor rests upon the landscape, but intimately nestles within it, mediating its scale to respect the surrounding urban fabric.

This project transforms an existing structure through a precise, three-part intervention: a sophisticated, new aluminum-and-glass skin cage that wraps the building, a total reconfiguration / reprograming of the interior and the insertion of a bold, inverted conically shaped conference room. This new conic volume pierces the roof plane, serving as a powerful, singular anchor that acts as a beacon for the neighborhood. It is a deliberate opaque architectural counterpoint to the otherwise transparent facade - a symbolic expression of the intellectual energy, conceptual strength and dedication housed within.
