Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation was founded after the devastation of New Orleans lower 9th Ward by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The purpose of the foundation was to (re)build affordable, sustainable neighborhoods for communities in need. Although not part of the original MIR commission, we felt compelled to think about and document what we considered to be a durable / flexible housing option for the Lower 9th Ward. This proposal keeps to essentially the program that Brad Pitt defined for the original 14 architects. The scheme is a 2 family home organized in a front to back manner, which maximizes the privacy of each. Each is positioned to have an entry off of the street. The front house is accessed from the garden via a stairway and the rear unit is accessed by a landscaped path along the side yard to a staircase conveniently located in the rear garden. The plan is identical but rotated 180 from each other on the site plan. The first floor, elevated 9 feet above grade, allows for a usable ground floor area containing planting, parking, storage, mechanical and rain water collection. Each home is organized around a double height void / space that incorporates the living / public space on the first level. The wrap around porch helps maintain the privacy of each unit as well as incorporating / emphasizing the local vernacular.
