The concept of a courtyard house is deeply rooted in history with the ancient Mesopotamia / Roman domus house as an early example. This 2860 sf home for a family of 4 is organized in plan as a classic nine square grid architectural typology on a single floor. The conceptual core of the project is the central square which is an open air, glass enclosed private courtyard - a void that acts as the anchor for the entire home.  The courtyard is a central garden which operates as a sanctuary / spiritual hearth for the family providing natural light, air circulation and a visual focal point from all surrounding spaces. The eight surrounding grid squares are organized into program zones of public and private spaces separated for both intimacy and communal living.

The material palette is comprised of a modern, natural aesthetic using cast concrete, natural timber, and stucco washed concrete masonry units.
