Project: The Arup Nexus – A Manifestation of Total Architecture
Rooted in Ove Arup’s 1970 directive, this project transcends conventional renovation to embody "Total Architecture"—a seamless integration of structural engineering, functional utility and aesthetic excellence. This proposal transforms the existing industrial footprint into an organized, public-facing hub designed to bridge the gap between technical expertise and public appreciation of the built environment.
The design is defined by a signature titanium canopy that acts as a structural narrative, folding into three distinct colored sheaves. This kinetic, volumetric gesture transitions from interior to exterior, defining the threshold while articulating the retail bays on either side of the entry.
The spatial strategy leverages the building's industrial heritage, creating a dynamic public dialogue:
- The Threshold: A dramatic folded titanium canopy defines the main entrance, creating a bold and singular identity for the firm.
- The Forum (Exhibition/Gallery): The southern bay is transformed into a double-height immersive space, designed to host public programming and foster awareness of the architectural profession.
- The Auditorium: The conversion of the existing truck bay into a technical public lecture hall, serves as the nucleus for community engagement.
- The Nexus (Programmatic Integration): The layout integrates a research library, archives, gym and pantry with a specialized conference center defined by a ramped threshold, ensuring that collaboration is woven into the daily life of the building.
By empowering the design team to fix priorities, this project manifests a synthesis of civic outreach, corporate identity and structural artistry - a true realization of Arup's vision.
